Biography
Professor Andrew Coats was born in Melbourne, Australia. He studied at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, where he earned a B.A. in Physiological Sciences with First-Class Honours, and then completed his medical degree (M.B. B.Chir.) at Clare College, Cambridge. He later obtained higher doctorates (D.M. and D.Sc.) in recognition of his substantial contributions to cardiovascular medicine, and he also completed an MBA at the London Business School. Professor Coats serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Cardiac Failure Review journal.
Career Overview
Andrew Coats is an internationally renowned academic cardiologist, inventor, and university leader with a career spanning more than three decades. He is currently the Scientific Director and CEO of the Heart Research Institute in Sydney, Australia. He also serves as Dean of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Affiliate Professor at Deakin University, and Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Monash University.
He holds international appointments as Professor of Medicine at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and Senior Professor at San Raffaele Pisana Scientific Institute in Italy.
Earlier in his career, he held major clinical and academic leadership positions including Viscount Royston Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College London, Consultant Cardiologist and Director of Cardiology at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London, Dean of Medicine and later Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sydney, and Joint Academic Vice-President of the Monash-Warwick Alliance. He also served as CEO of the Norwich Research Park in the United Kingdom.
Research, Innovation & Leadership
Professor Coats has authored more than 750 peer-reviewed research papers, holds over 20 patents, and has accrued more than 120,000 career citations with an H-index of 146. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in chronic heart failure, including major contributions to the “muscle hypothesis” of heart failure and involvement in landmark international clinical trials that have shaped global treatment guidelines.
As an inventor and entrepreneur, he co-founded biotechnology companies translating research into therapeutic interventions for cachexia and muscle-wasting disorders. He has amassed extensive board-level governance experience and has been associated with more than USD 500 million in research and institutional fundraising throughout his career.
Professional Service & Recognition
- He was elected to the Presidential Trio of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (HFA-ESC) in 2018, serving as President from 2020 to 2022
- Previously, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Cardiology for approximately 18 years, during which time he raised its impact factor significantly
- In 2017 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his distinguished service to medical research, tertiary education in cardiology, and mentorship to younger scientists
- In 2023 he was named a “Highly Cited Researcher” by Clarivate, placing him among the most influential scientists globally
- Most recently, media recognition ranked him as Australia’s top researcher in cardiology based on citation impact, reaffirming his continued influence
Current Roles & Interests
- As of 2025, Professor Coats serves as Scientific Director & CEO of the Heart Research Institute, where he leads strategic direction, research priorities, and international collaborations
- His research remains focused on heart failure, particularly on integrated pathophysiological and treatment studies, cachexia and sarcopenia (muscle wasting), hypertension epidemiology (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring), and broader themes including research governance, organizational behaviour in academia, and publishing ethics
- In parallel with his scientific work, Professor Coats maintains active roles in biotechnology, including board-level leadership and the founding of companies translating basic research into therapeutics
