Biography

Prof Michel Burnier, MD, is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and former Head of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland and Invited Professor at the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland.

He trained in internal medicine and nephrology in Lausanne (CH) and at the University of Colorado Health Science Center, Denver, Colorado (US). He is a member of several Swiss and international societies in the fields of nephrology and hypertension. He is an ad hoc member of the Scientific Council of the European Society of Hypertension and treasurer of the ESH Foundation, as well as the past President of the Swiss Society of Nephrology and of the Swiss Society of Hypertension.

Prof Burnier is a member of the editorial board of several international journals in the field of hypertension and nephrology and is the actual editor in chief of Blood Pressure.

His research interests are the renal mechanisms of hypertension and the pathogenesis of disease progression in chronic kidney diseases, with a special emphasis on the role of sodium. He has also worked on the clinical pharmacology of new antihypertensive drugs in humans, with a special emphasis on drugs affecting the renin-angiotensin system. Today, his main research interest is drug adherence and therapeutic inertia with a special focus on team-based care.
